Do you journal on a regular basis? Maybe you have kept a journal before and then lost momentum. Or maybe, like many, you have never kept a journal, and have never jotted something down inside of a notebook. It is well-known that journaling is a great mental health activity. For all of the list-makers out there, you know how organized you feel after making a list of anything, even if it’s a long list of things that need to be done. Writing notes and information down, actually putting pen to paper, is an amazing creative and mental release.
National Write Your Story Day was earlier this month and we believe writing your story is something you can do through journaling on a daily basis. Writing down your own story, and where life has taken you, is a great way to realize and process your journey and see how the people in your life have impacted your story. Each life event adds to your legacy. Journaling your life experiences can help you to see from the outside who you are as a person, and maybe who you want to be if you are not there yet. When you take time to journal for just a short amount of time each day, you begin to see your dreams and ambitions. You begin to see what matters most to you, and it might be a surprise as things begin flowing out of your heart.
As ideas and goals and dreams become alive on paper, an amazing state of mindfulness begins to take place and settles in to your daily outlook. Writing can wipe out anxiety and fear, as peace washes over in the wake of a present, mindful mentality. If you struggle with the past, have fears of the future, or are in a battle over current circumstances, journaling will help you process your feelings and thoughts, and help you identify what you actually have control over, and thus, what you should invest in emotionally.
Journaling can be incredibly healing. Journaling can help create a way out for those blocked emotions, and can help you to feel better overall. Along with all of these great reasons to start journaling, another amazing thing that can come from writing, is to be able to look back weeks, months, and years of where you once were, and see how far you have come. This is a great way to also keep track of goals you had once hoped for, and to see if you have accomplished them or if other opportunities presented over time.
A great blessing that can come from all of these examples is that you can use your story and where you have been in life, to help and inspire someone else that may be in the same walk of life that you were once in. Your successes and achievements, and your trials and heartbreak all have extraordinary messages of hope within them if they are given words and used in a way to encourage others. Imagine your children or grandchildren finding your journals and learning wonderful wisdom from you and your experiences.
While most of us are not as comfortable talking about emotions and events that have happened in our past, it becomes easier and more fluid the more you journal. Take on the assignment, though it may be a challenge, and write your story.
